INTERVIEW: ‘WANNA BE HAPPY?’ | KIRK FRANKLIN TALKS NEW SINGLE | NOW AVAILABLE ON iTUNES | @kirkfranklin |

Kirk Franklin breaks his radio silence at the nationally syndicated Steve Harvey Morning Show as he premieres “Wanna Be Happy?,”  the contemporary gospel pioneer’s first new single in almost five years.

Available on iTunes at midnight on the 28th  as well, “Wanna Be Happy?” is the lead track from Franklin’s November-slated studio album via the singer’s RCA-distributed Fo Yo Soul Recordings. Franklin’s last solo album was 2011’s Hello Fear. The project — his tenth chart-topper — spent 19 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Gospel Albums chart and has sold 572,000 according to Nielsen Music. Debuting and peaking at No. 5 on the Billboard 200, Hello Fear also spun off the hit “I Smile.” The single reigned at No. 1 on Hot Gospel Songs for 23 weeks.

The Happy rollout will continue through the weekend as Franklin is set to perform the song for the first time during the Aug. 30 live season finale of BET’s Sunday Best. On the eve of the single’s radio premiere, the seven-time Grammy winner talked to Billboard about the single’s inspiration, the reasons behind his recording break and why he’s been afraid.

Billboard: What inspired your new single?
Franklin: First and foremost, every human being wants to be happy. And we will try different things all in the pursuit of that feeling. With this song I’m saying if you really want to be happy, you have to start with the originator. It’s like wanting to lose weight. Do you really want to lose weight? Because if you do, there’s a price to pay: You have to work at it. And this song is saying if you really want to be happy, let’s get to the nitty-gritty of what that is. We’re not the architects of our lives. We’ve got to go to the manufacturer. And it’s my goal to try to lead people to the manufacturer of their souls.

Why the nearly five-year break?

I’ve been working on several other ventures to help keep God in the culture and the conversation. I’m still doing the Kirk Franklin Gospel Brunch with the House of Blues. And we’re in the eighth season of BET’s Sunday Best [which he hosts and co-executive produces]. I looked up and almost five years had passed.

How would you describe the new album?

This is probably my most intentional work, surprisingly romantic and direct at the same time. I can’t reveal the title yet. But people will be excited by the special guests I have on the album, which I’m mixing now. I’m speechless as to how it’s turning out; just thankful that after 22 years that God would still trust me with something so special I never saw it coming. I’ve been afraid.

Afraid of what?

Every artist is afraid… or just afraid to admit it. Artists are insecure, sometimes weird people who are sensitive about their gift and craft. And the culture and climate [in the industry] have been changing. After you’ve done something for so long, you become afraid that people may not want to hear you do that anymore; afraid that people might have moved on.

Who else is on the Fo Yo Soul roster?

Besides myself, there’s The Walls Group, Tasha Page-Lockhart, Geoffrey Golden and Christon Gray, our latest signing. We’re just trying to bring new heartbeats into the genre.

TRUTH: MIND TOUCHING WORDS FROM A MOTHER TO HER DAUGHTER ABOUT MARRIAGE

I read the following article not long ago, and I could not help but highlight the above words. Please, continue to read to have a better understanding - The best advice ever from a good mother to her daughter!

LASTLY MY DAUGHTER, DO NOT INFORM ME OF YOUR QUARRELS, I DIDN’T JOIN YOU TOGETHER, GOD DID, GO AND INFORM HIM AND HE ALONE WILL SORT YOU OUT.

1. The wife that wins all arguments with her husband is not wise. The home is not a law court.

2. The wife that uses sex as a weapon in the home - placing embargo, going to bed in jeans shorts and trousers -lacks wisdom.

3. The wife that uses the modern trends and laws of "women's rights" to insult or ridicule her husband simply makes a fool of herself.

4. A woman that makes her home devoid of peace through bickering, nagging and quarrels needs help.
A man should be eager to run away from office to be at home, for that should be the safest and closest place on earth for him.

5. Modern-day equality in marriage does not mean competition, It simply means partnership. Taking advantage of such equality to turn around and become the defector head of the home and oppress the man is tantamount to playing with fire. If you destroy your home, soon you will be the boss of an empty home.

6. A wise wife makes the man feel so good that he assumes that he is the head. Once he gets that feeling, the woman gently wields her power and the head actually turns to wherever the neck wants without a protest.

7. A wife that does not pull herself away from friends' influence and advice or even from the control of her mother and father will have herself to blame.

8. When a man is looking for a wife, he bypasses women of different shapes and sizes to choose a wife but soon after childbirth, many women hide under the excuse of childbirth to let go of themselves. Many stop bothering about their looks, shape, dressing, etc.
Within 5 years of marriage, people start wondering if the wife is the man's aunt, even though she is 7 years younger. Her defense is that if he truly loves her, he should love her the way she is but when looking for a wife, he saw people like the present YOU and ignored them and settled for the former YOU.
Today, you go to bed smelling of onions.... You go to bed wearing grandmothers' clothes. Why are you playing with your marriage? Love is not about looks - we know But looks enhances love and marriage There is a difference between someone disfiguring herself and the person being disfigured by an accident. Please don't be complacent. As hard as it may be, work on looking like you were when he first saw you and began the chase.

9. If every night you are tired, sleepy, sore, down with headache or fever, "not in the mood," you are a joker, a serious comedian!

10. If your children suddenly become more important to you than your husband, you need prayers.

11. If you assume that as the woman, only you need to be pampered and fussed over while the man is a stone that has no emotions, you need to be pitied.

12. A woman that has the mind of a wife does not excite her husband. Wives are usually complacent and presumptuous. A wife must strive to have the mind of a girlfriend, A girlfriend is always nicer, sweeter, more loving and always thinking of ways to wow her sweetheart; a girlfriend does not try to win all arguments, does not call the man a "useless man", is not careless about her looks or dressing, always smiles and laughs with the man, sends the man sweet messages and calls, etc. Are you your husband's girlfriend in word and indeed?

“LASTLY MY DAUGHTER, DO NOT INFORM ME OF YOUR QUARRELS, I DIDN’T JOIN YOU TOGETHER, GOD DID, GO AND INFORM HIM AND HE ALONE WILL SORT YOU OUT”.

For Your Heart

What is it that seems so elusive to find

That can fill in this void,

Give me peace from the grind

There’s so much to endure and time just fades away

The scars from before,

Are still here today

No matter the bitterness from the past

From suffering pain or love that didn’t last

To fear from a future you cannot cope

Your tired, broken…..

There seems….no hope

But because a Man named Jesus Christ

Who suffered all, surrendered all

He gave it all, He took the fall

He answered the call……

He loves us all

Has paid our debt……

You can be free from the tears

Free from regret

He’s chosen and knows you

Set you apart

He only asks you…..

For your heart

TRUTH: CAN YOU TRULY FORGIVE?

Blessed Divine Austine

Is there someone in your life that you are really having a hard time loving? You may have even told others that you’ve forgiven this person, that you have no hard feelings towards them, but the truth is, there's an element of hate in your heart that just won’t go away. Whenever you think about the hurt this person has caused you, you get angry all over again. You may have even secretly wish harm upon this person. But if the first thought you have about someone is the hurt they once caused you, then you haven’t truly forgiven them.

iCelebrates: Forgiving the Unforgiveable - T.D. Jakes

Ricky Jackson, Ronnie Bridgeman and Wiley Bridgeman were just teenagers
when they were convicted of a crime they didn't commit and were
wrongfully imprisoned for decades. Eddie Vernon was just 12 years old
when he was coerced to testify against the men and has lived with this
lie for most of his life.

Can Eddie ever be forgiven -- and
forgive himself -- for his lie? T.D. Jakes speaks with all of these men
to see if they can forgive the unforgivable.

Original airdate Monday August 24, 2015.

The T.D. Jakes show airs in Atlanta, Cleveland, Dallas and Minneapolis. Find out when it's on: http://bit.ly/WhenItsOnTDJ
